Fred’s Bookshop – Ambleside

Walking up the hill through Ambleside, you’ll see the sign you’ve been looking for, Fred’s Bookshop, at the top of the high street.

Fred’s covers the whole range; from BookTok influenced trends to the ambitious and erudite looking Fitzcarraldo Editions, I think you’re very likely to find something you like and perhaps even something you didn’t know you’d love.

A compact footprint, they have used the space well to add cosy nooks and window seats to give a relaxed feel to your book browsing experience. There’s a good selection of fiction covering all the highly acclaimed hard and soft bound favourites, as well as a selection of crime and thriller, classics, history and poetry. Of course, given the location, there is a beautifully stocked nature and outdoors section giving ample selection to inspire your trip.

Upstairs there’s a good space for children’s and young adult’s books with the young children’s books at a lower height, which will surely help engage their target audience. Besides the children’s section is a well cultivated sprinkling of Science Fiction and Fantasy.

Along with all the excellent choices, the staff are very friendly and are always happy to help. They offer a pre-order service for your holiday reading if you have a trip booked, or you can also support by ordering from them on bookshop.org. Some say the fells are the gem of Ambleside, but I think you can make a strong case for Fred’s.
